Since 1982, The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts has been feeding our neighbors in need and leading the community to end hunger. We are the umbrella organization for the emergency food network in Western Massachusetts, bringing nutritious food to hundreds of our member agencies, including pantries, meal sites, shelters, rehabilitation facilities, senior centers, and more. We distribute food to our member agencies in Berkshire, Franklin, Hampden and Hampshire counties. These organizations are the local front-line food assistance providers that serve people in need.
Brown Bag: Food for Elders
Our Brown Bag: Food for Elders program provides a free bag of healthy groceries to eligible seniors once a month at local senior centers and community organizations. The food items are specifically selected to meet seniors’ special dietary requirements to help them stay healthy and active.
The Brown Bag program is for people over the age of 55 who meet certain income guidelines. If you qualify for SSI, Medicaid, Fuel Assistance, Veteran’s Aid or have a documented disability for which you receive SSDI , you probably qualify to receive Brown Bag monthly groceries.
To apply, call The Food Bank at (413) 247-9738 or 1-800-247-9632.
Mobile Food Bank
The Mobile Food Bank program is made possible by a grant from the Stop & Shop Family Foundation
Our Mobile Food Bank delivers a truck full of free fresh and non-perishable groceries from our warehouse directly to a community site for immediate distribution to residents. The program reaches under-served populations throughout Western Massachusetts that don’t have access to healthy foods, including families, seniors and children.
There are no eligibility requirements to receive food from our Mobile Food Bank. Anyone in need of assistance can attend. It’s a good idea to arrive 10-15 minutes prior to distribution time, and bring with you boxes or bags to carry your food.
Call 413-247-9738 for information about monthly distribution locations.
SNAP Outreach & Enrollment
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly Food Stamps) is the largest domestic hunger program in the country, offering nutrition assistance to millions of eligible individuals and families.
Benefits are distributed through an electronic benefit transfer (EBT) card, which works like a debit card at local grocery stores, convenience stores, and even some local farmers markets, farm stands and community supported agriculture (CSA – also known as “farm shares”). Look for the USDA “We Welcome SNAP Benefits” sign.
The first step in applying for benefits is to complete an application. Our SNAP Coordinators can prescreen you for eligibility, and if eligible, can complete an application over the phone.
For assistance with the application process, please contact our SNAP outreach team at 413-247-9738.
